Body Image, Healthy Eating
and Young People

This pack has been developed to be used in work with young people aged 11-18 in a school or youth club setting. It is aimed at both girls and boys because image, and the food we eat, are issues that affect us all.

Schools and youth clubs are faced with many issues to tackle in the personal, social and health education of young people; drugs, sexuality, smoking, safety. Underpinning all of these issues is a young person's sense of self and sense of worth. Our view of ourselves is shaped by the world around us and by our own personality. It is the role of schools and youth clubs to ensure that, so far as possible, young people get positive messages about themselves and learn the skills to view themselves in a positive light.

The pack focusses around body image and healthy eating because of a need identified in health promotion to support professionals dealing with the issue of healthy eating in a more balanced and realistic way than simply looking at obesity or anorexia. We want to put body image and self esteem first and build in healthy eating in terms of priority issues.
