If a permanent tooth has been knocked out

Stay calm...

  • Reassure the child.
  • If you are not the parent, contact the parents or carer.
  • Arrange to take the child to a dentist immediately - ideally within 30 minutes
  • If this isn’t possible - keep the tooth in milk or water.
  • Do not touch the root of the tooth.
  • Do not put the tooth into any antiseptic.
  • It may be possible to carefully hold the tooth by the crown and gently replace the tooth into the hole.
  • If it is a deciduous (baby tooth) - do not try and put the tooth back into the hole.  Put it into water or milk and take it with you and the child to the dentist.
