If a permanent tooth has been knocked
out
Stay
calm...
- Reassure the child.
- If you are not the parent,
contact the parents or carer.
- Arrange to take the child to a dentist
immediately - ideally within 30 minutes
- If this isn’t possible
- keep the tooth in milk or water.
- Do not touch the root of the
tooth.
- Do not put the tooth into any antiseptic.
- It may
be possible to carefully hold the tooth by the crown and gently
replace the tooth into the hole.
- If it is a deciduous (baby tooth)
- do not try and put the tooth back into the hole. Put
it into water or milk
and take
it with
you and the child
to the dentist.

See a dentist
as soon as possible

Accident Prevention
To prevent teeth being knocked out when playing
contact sports - wear a mouth guard made by your dentist just for
you.

Bitten lip or tongue
Stay calm...
- Reassure the child.
- If you are not the parent,
contact the parents or carer.
- Arrange to take the child to the dentist
to check the mouth, and injured area.
- Wear gloves
- Stop or control the bleeding by applying
direct pressure to the area with a clean cloth.
- If there is swelling
apply a cold compress.
- If the bleeding doesn’t stop arrange
to take the child to the nearest accident and emergency department
in hospital.
- Always wear gloves if possible.
