COURSE RATIONALE

Health, environment and social welfare is undergoing a radical and profound change. The Government programme is to improve the health of the population and reduce inequalities and promote social inclusion and rehabilitation.

The traditional structures, methods and boundaries between organisations and professions are becoming increasingly intermingled as partnerships develop and “joined up” policy implications progress.

Within these changes, Health Promotion and Public Health, as a perspective, method and philosophy has gained increasing importance.
No longer is Health Promotion and Public Health the preserve of the NHS. It is now central to the work of the Home Office and Departments of the Environment, Education and Social Services
Enhanced knowledge and skills in Health Promotion and Public Health will help you to work within the context of these priorities and the paradigm shifts. In addition you will be able to undertake your health education and health promotion tasks more effectively and with more confidence. Your ability to reflect, assess evidence and be self-critical of your own approach and techniques is a necessary step towards autonomous professional behaviour, and will be emphasised throughout the programme.

The programme seeks to complement your existing knowledge base through a process of educational and professional enrichment and to establish a basis from which a more informed action and decision making in Health Promotion practice can be made.
