The launch of ‘The AGILE Programme’ AGeing for Independent Living in East Berkshire 8 Jun 2006 Falls and osteoporosis are everybody’s business! National Falls Awareness Day on 27 June will see the launch of the East Berkshire ‘AGILE Programme’ by the four local Falls Groups. In 2005, a comprehensive Falls Strategy was produced detailing a vision of care for older people in East Berkshire at risk from falls and fractures. As a significant increase in the population aged 65 and older is anticipated over the coming years it is more important than ever to have a concerted response to the approach of fall and fracture prevention. Even now it is estimated that about 16,000 over 65’s in East Berkshire fall each year resulting in some 1,700 major injuries including 300 hip fractures. Both the human cost and financial burden of this are huge, however much can be done by professionals, carers and older people themselves to reverse risk factors of falls and osteoporotic fractures. ‘The AGILE Programme’ aims to inform all concerned about recognising people at risk and the Falls Care Pathway. It is envisaged that it may take up to two years to reach all those in health, social services, voluntary and independent sectors. The overriding message will be that much can be done to prevent falls, fractures and osteoporosis thereby helping to maintain quality of life and independence for older people locally. For more information about ‘The AGILE Programme’ please contact the local Falls Group chairs:
