This year’s National Falls Awareness Day was held on Tuesday 24 June and a big success both nationally and locally. Nationwide over 600 events took place, and locally there was a lot of enthusiasm spreading falls and fracture prevention messages to shoppers, in-patients, day hospital patients, staff and anyone else willing to talk and listen. In Slough’s “Montem Leisure Centre” there was an information stand, a Tai Chi demonstration and the locally produced DVD showing older people how to get up from the floor after a fall. Wexham House Residential Home and Manor Park Day Centre enjoyed a talk on falls prevention, seated exercise and Tai Chi as well as a demonstration of the DVD and a walking aid MOT by Upton Hospital physiotherapists. Shoppers in Bracknell, Windsor and Maidenhead all had the opportunity to talk to local falls group members and take away leaflets and DVDs or videos, often for elderly relatives. Information displays and DVDs were also available at Maidenhead Town Hall, PCT wards, St. Mark’s Nursing Centre, sheltered housing units and at a number of GP surgeries and Health Centres across East Berkshire.National Falls Awareness Day 2008 - 24th June May 2008 National Falls Awareness Day is run each year by Help the Aged. The guideline which includes links to falls prevention is aimed primarily at professionals who are in a position to prescribe medication. The PCT’s Operational Policy East Berkshire Falls Service for Older People has also been finalised and will become available during November 2007 on this website as well as via the PCT website www.berkshireeast-pct.nhs.uk
