Events on National Falls Awareness Day 2008 - 24 June

This year’s National Falls Awareness Day was held on Tuesday 24 June and a big success both nationally and locally.

Nationwide over 600 events took place, and locally there was a lot of enthusiasm spreading falls and fracture prevention messages to shoppers, in-patients, day hospital patients, staff and anyone else willing to talk and listen.

In Slough’s “Montem Leisure Centre” there was an information stand, a Tai Chi demonstration and the locally produced DVD showing older people how to get up from the floor after a fall.  Wexham House Residential Home and Manor Park Day Centre enjoyed a talk on falls prevention, seated exercise and Tai Chi as well as a demonstration of the DVD and a walking aid MOT by Upton Hospital physiotherapists.

Shoppers in Bracknell, Windsor and Maidenhead all had the opportunity to talk to local falls group members and take away leaflets and DVDs or videos, often for elderly relatives.  Information displays and DVDs were also available at Maidenhead Town Hall, PCT wards, St. Mark’s Nursing Centre, sheltered housing units and at a number of GP surgeries and Health Centres across East Berkshire.

National Falls Awareness Day 2008 - 24th June

May 2008

National Falls Awareness Day is run each year by Help the Aged. The theme for 2008 is 'Stepping Out'.

The main messages are:

  • Falls are not an inevitable part of getting older
  • Acting now can prevent problems in the future;
  • Everyone can actively improve their strength and balance
  • It's important to involve all older people, including those not always reached by existing services.
